Why Study a Foundation Apprenticeship?

Studying for a Foundation Apprenticeship gives you the chance to combine qualifications such as Skills for Work (SfW) National Subjects or National Progression Awards (NPAs) with practical work experience in industry.

Who Can Apply?

The Foundation Apprenticeship (FA) in Engineering is for pupils staying on at school. You can choose this FA which is 2 years’ long as one of your subjects in S5 (or in some cases S4).

Entry Requirements

  • Nat 5 Maths and capable of Higher Maths by the end of the FA.
  • Good level of written/spoken English (level 5 Literacy or Nat 5 English)
  • Committed and flexible
  • Able to work with others
  • Ability to problem solve

Qualifications Gained

  • NC at level 6 in Mechanical Engineering.
  • 5 units (3 mandatory and 2 optional units) of SVQ Performing Engineering Operations at SCQF Level 5.
  • Work placement/industry challenge.

During this course you will learn…

You will study for an NC at level 6 in Mechanical Engineering. You will also study 5 units from SVQ Performing Engineering Operations at SCQF Level 5 as well as attending a work placement or participating in an industry challenge.

This is a great time to start your engineering career as there’s a huge demand for new talent. UK companies are actively looking to employ people with engineering skills.

Aberdeenshire Council Delivery

This course may be delivered by Aberdeenshire Council Specialist FA Trainers or in conjunction with a local external provider.

Meta-skills

Your Foundation Apprenticeship will also help you to develop core skills valued by employers, particularly:

  • Communication
  • Problem solving
  • Working with others
  • Time management

These transferable skills are necessary and highly desirable for working in a range of other related jobs.

Attend class each week

Be committed to learning new things and completing your work within a given timescale

What can I go on to next?

  • Employment.
  • University or College:  you could continue your studies, gaining a Higher National Diploma (HND)  or degree in an engineering discipline.
  • You could complete a Modern Apprenticeship in Engineering.
