Developing the Young Workforce Programme

The aim of the national Developing the Young Workforce Programme is for employers to work with schools and community partners to help young people gain the skills, experiences and qualities needed to help prepare them for the world of work.

Working with our schools and young people will help make learning real and will better prepare them for real work situations.

Typical activities could include:

  • Work placements including Foundation Apprenticeships
  • Career inputs and/or events
  • Workplace visits
  • Work shadowing
  • Curriculum inputs/challenges
  • Mentoring
  • Mock interviews

Through your partnerships and collaboration with schools you will grow your business, develop your skills base, and invest in future talent that could become key members of your team in the future.

To become involved or explore opportunities:

1.

Make direct contact with your local school through the school office to discuss what you can offer, and they need.

All academies in Aberdeenshire have Employee School Coordinators (ESC) who can support these discussions. In primary and nursery this will be done by a designated member of staff.

2.

If you have a specific interest in offering Work Placements/Experience for young people either as part of a Foundation Apprenticeship or more broadly please contact the Aberdeenshire Council Work Placement Unit

Email: workplacementunit@aberdeenshire.gov.uk

3.

Developing the Young Workforce Northeast works with Employers to set up links to schools. Their Employer School Coordinators are linked to schools and establish and support partnerships. If you have made a contact via school, you will probably be introduced to this person. They can discuss the various options for links and can help you enter into partnership and agreements with schools. If you wish, will also be able to take you into a formal relationship through the Young Person’s Guarantee

Young People/Schools

As part of Developing the Young Workforce employers work closely with schools to help young people gain the meta skills, experiences and qualities needed to help them prepare for the world of work. This can start in nursery and primary and will build up as they move into and through secondary school. It could include:

  • Businesses visiting classes to work with young people and teachers.
  • Workplace visits.
  • Career inputs and events
  • Work placements, including Foundation Apprenticeships, where you spend time in a business weekly or for an extended period of time.
  • Work shadowing.
  • Mentoring where a businessperson supports your learning and ambitions.
  • Mock interviews to prepare you for “real” interviews.

Schools work with businesses and there are wide ranges of opportunities within many industries for young people to gain experience as well as opportunities for schools to set up links with businesses.
